    your pump on your mechanical filter is going to get clogged way to fast , put all your bio media on the bottom and one or two layers of mechanical at the very top and then once they clog, hose them down and redo ... all you needed is 3 bags of lava rock .... and 2 layers of mechanical and its a done deal

      Yeah, could try putting plants in just gravel to help with excess nutrients? Whats the sun situation like? Is the pond in full sun? And have you still got fish in there?

    So how does that filter water I don't understand?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial 7 часов назад

      The water is pumped from the pond into the bottom of the filter, it then rises up the through the planter, which is filled with gravel, which provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow, this beneficial bacteria will convert ammonia (which is toxic to fish) to nitrite (which is also toxic to fish) to nitrate (which is only toxic in high concentrations). The plants that will be planted in the filter will soak up the nitrates before they reach toxic levels (they will also soak up ammonia directly), and therefore keeping the water biologically safe for fish. Whilst this is all going on, physical waste will settle in the bottom of the filter, which the plants can also tap into. It’s not the perfect filter design as I didn’t include a clean-out valve to remove the waste that will build up at the bottom. But I have since made a better filter that does include a clean out valve. You can see it in the filter I’ll built in this video: ruclips.net/video/oFc0oT5Zhks/видео.htmlsi=73FtmGbyShQzb9n4 Hope that helps!

    Thank you for helping wildlife, but if a turtle gets in there he might drown. There's no gradual slope for escape.

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial День назад

      Hi there, we don’t have turtles here, but good call, I should have probs mentioned that for people in areas that do. I do agree though that a gradual slope is probably better for a wildlife pond generally, even if you don’t have turtles.. in this case though I thought with the pond being so small I didn’t want to take up too much space with a ramp. 🌿🐢

    Hi, I get mixed information about using a heater or not over winter. I have a Blagdon Affinity Grand Octagon pond, it's 708ltr, it's a raised pond. Some people say let the fish go dormant helps them grow better. I'm new to ponds, this winter will be the first winter. Ive got goldfish koi and a weather loach in it. What heater should I use? Do I need one? I've seen a heater that does a 600+litre aquarium so wondered if that was any good? Thank you

    • @GingerFishyOfficial

      Thankyou! Yeah, the edge of the pond has little grooves around it, which I think is for overflow, and I’m hoping any excess water can be soaked up by the plants around the pond. I’ll see how it goes though. I’m actually just in the process of adding an overflow pipe to my big pond that I built last year, which I’ll be showing in the 1 year update video.

    Great informative video. I was nailed to watching everything you shared here 😂. Great job 👏 I was wondering though, I've got an enclosed fenced garden: if I did something like that, how would wildlife get into my garden for such a pond 😮? Or wouldn't it 🤔? Many thanks for giving me ideas, particularly as to what plants (I've never heard of 😅) I might be advised to invest in ❤

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial 2 дня назад

      Hi there! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! Yeah, if there’s no gap under the fence some wildlife will struggle to find the pond.. obviously dragonfly and birds will be able to enjoy it still.. I know some people try to leave a gap somewhere along the fence line to help wildlife move around, luckily for me there is a gap under my gate, so the toad must have come in there. You never though, a bird might drop off a bit of frogspawn for you!! Yeah, I think all the plants I used are either evergreen or perennial, apart from the water lettuce which won’t survive the winter here in the UK, so I’ll have to remove it when the temps start to get too low. 😊

    • @christinekane6059
      @christinekane6059 2 дня назад

      @GingerFishyOfficial Wow- that's such a GREAT amount of GOOD information 👌. Thank you. I know I've got a frog 🐸 in my garden (somewhere): him must have hid in the flowers/plants I had in my old koi pond at our old place (16 years ago). So despite the amount of renovations I've had, carried out to the garden areas, it's a miracle he's still alive. You should have heard him in Feb/April calling for a mate 😀. So another reason: to encourage the dragonflies back. We used to have quite a few, but the last couple of years, not so much. Anyway, many thanks for your prompt response and further suggestions: really helps 👍

    I had a bizarre experience last winter. I went out to water plants in my greenhouse and noticed that the goldfish in my pond were up at the surface looking for food. I threw some flakes to them but they didn't touch them. I decided to remove the food rather than have it rot and only then did I realize there was a cm of the clearest ice I have ever seen covering the pond! By the next day it had gone. I wouldn't worry about heating a goldfish pond in UK 2024. It's not like we ever have real winters any more!
